Ida*
Is a grandmother to and the sole supporter of her family of three. When her car broke down, she could not convince the dealer to fix it – even though the needed repairs were covered by a dealer’s warranty. Ida was in danger of losing her job because she did not have $2,000 to repair her car. She went to ALSC for help, and a staff attorney contacted the dealer on Ida’s behalf. They negotiated an agreement for completion of the repairs. As a result, Ida was able to keep her job and continue to support her family. (Approximate cost of representation: $200)

Joseph*
Has a 10-year-old daughter with a disability. For years, he did his best to advocate for his daughter, but was not successful in getting the services he believed his daughter needed. Joseph knew that without access to education, his daughter’s future was dim. An ALSC staff attorney went with him to meet with school officials. Together, they outlined a plan to help his daughter do better both inside and outside of the classroom. (Approximate cost of representation: $650)

Jessica*
Is a victim of domestic violence and a mother of 2 young children. In order to make a better and safer life for her children, she separated from her violent husband. Jessica got a job and her own apartment and was working on self-sufficiency. But her job was threatened because her husband wouldn’t stop calling her at work. Her landlord threatened to evict her because her husband kept beating on her door in the middle of the night, disturbing the other neighbors. With help from a staff attorney at ALSC, Jessica got a civil protective order banning her husband from contacting her at home or work. With this order in place, Jessica was able to keep her job and apartment, as well as keeping her children safe. (Approximate cost of representation: $1,800)

You may have noticed a common thread running through these stories: Our clients are often people who try to solve their problems on their own. But sometimes they find that without legal assistance they are voiceless. They need your help.
